Vintage Helmets

I just LOVE vintage helmets and I can’t wait to get to the next antique store, swap meet or garage sale to add to my collection!

Now, don’t forget that these vintage helmets are just for looks – there’s no way in the world that they’d be safe to use today – for several reasons. First, they were never as safe as the helmets of today, due to design and materials. Second, those materials degrade with time, making them even more unsafe as time goes by. But, they still look great.

The ones I like the best is a vintage motorcycle helmet. Especially the ones with the little visor out front. While I know that these early motorcycle helmets just aren’t as safe as a full-face helmet made today, they sure are fun to look at, especially a Vintage 1979 Bell Motorcycle Helmet w/RT Decal Stripes. The style of these old helmets is just fantastic!

Don’t forget about the other vintage helmets out there – like a vintage fire helmet. Did you know that the really old ones, the ones from the 1920′s, are made from leather? That’s right – they didn’t have high-strength plastics back then (or any plastic, for that matter), so the helmets were made of leather, with the letters and numbers embossed in the the leather itself. Cool.

A vintage football helmet is probably one of the neatest helmets ever made! I know, the protection was probably pretty minimal, but the look was fantastic! If you like the old movies from the 1930′s and 1940′s, you will see a lot of these old football helmets.

Naturally, they’re made of leather and many did not survive because leather deteriorates if not cared for properly. But, a lot of these vintage helmets did survive, and are available even today!

Vintage helmets are one of my favorite collectibles, and many of these old helmets have tons of history hidden inside!
