What are the purpose of US Army helmet symbols?

Some troops in Iraq have helmet symbols on the sides of their helmets. Are these used to ID what unit that soldier is in within a regiment or division? Whats the origin of these symbols? WWII?

  1. The face of reality Says:

They are used to ID the unit and side that the soldier in on. If a helmet is found, it can be assumed that that person or a certain rank or side has been to that area. It doesn’t work as well as dog tags though

  2. Shock and Awe Says:

Yes, it shows what regiment or division. Only a few units do it: 4ID, 3ID, and the regiments in101st ABN DIV for example. It was a common practice in WW2 for these units (like the WW2 2nd and 5th Ranger BNs did then but the 2nd RGR BN does not now) and it is just their connection with their history.

Yes,each unit had its own symbol as a way of instilling pride in that unit from the new recruits. We humans are a breed in which we need camaraderie and a feeling of belonging. The military will show this to you and it makes you feel like it’s a “members only club” that lasts your whole life.

it tells what DIV the soldier is in. not sure the origin, to me it just makes something to aim for….just another uniformity thing.

  5. Futuremarine005 Says:

It’s mainly used for ID’ing the helmet, but they look kinda cool too.
