Vintage Bell Helmet – Get One For Yourself

If you have motorcycles in your blood (and in your past), then there’s probably a vintage Bell Helmet in there somewhere – right?

It doesn’t matter if you rode street bikes, moto-cross, racing or plain trail riding, the Bell helmet was (and is) the best helmet to protect your brain bucket from most injuries that your could get while riding a motorcycle.

In my own case, which was around 30 years ago, my first vintage Bell helmet actually cost more than my motorcycle. The old bike was a well-used Honda 350 Twin, 1973 vintage. Chrome fenders, chrome exhaust and a single dick brake up front really made it a pleasant tourer. But my Bell Star helmet was something else. Of course, it wasn’t vintage back then – no, it was brand-new, and I bought it by mail order for around $350. That was a chunk of change for a guy bringing home around $1,200 each month.

But my Bell helmet was a great investment. It was the full-face style, and I got several different face guards – clear for night and smoked for sunny days. It was silver in color, with no stripes that I can remember, although it did have a prominent “Bell” logo on the back. It’s funny what you remember from long ago, but that helmet had the neatest smell – I was never quite sure what it was – that always smelled fresh and clean. Even after a long, sweaty day on the road.

I must have put over 25,000 miles on that vintage Bell helmet.  Fortunately, I never had to put that classic motorcycle to use as I never even dumped the bike, much less had a serious accident.

The good news these days is that a vintage Bell helmet can be had at a reasonable price to relive those old days yourself.
