Vintage Fire Helmet

For some reason, a vintage fire helmet is a very interesting collectible these days – especially the full leather or brass vintage helmets of 100 years ago or more.

The Cairns vintage fire helmet is an especially valuable collectible vintage helmet, probably due to its rarity (I’m sure that very few have survived because the vast majority were made of leather) and its classic good looks. Just think back to a vintage Keystone Cops or Buster Keaton movie made in the 1920′s – if there was a firefighter he’d be wearing one of those Cairn vintage fire helmets for sure.

Of course, there are many more fine types of vintage fire helmet – think about the all-brass chief’s hat. Probably all of the vintage fire helmets had liners and straps – find a vintage helmet with one of these, and you’ll be doing well. In later years, clear up to the 1960′s the fire helmets still kept the same basic shape but were instead made of aluminum and steel (for the cheaper ones). It was during the 1960′s that helmet designers discovered plastic – it really is a great material for these helmets – and began to use plastic in earnest.
